Writing Assignment #1:  How to study for this course.

    9/4/07

    Critical Reading

"The first question Dr. Wagner asked about the Sappho readings was what was the meaning of the word “he” in the second fragment.  What seemed to be a simple question turned into a discussion that took the entire class to answer.  This made me realize the importance, especially in poems, about reading critically.  Each word must be understood and analyzed in order to get the meaning of the poem. If one does not understand, it is his or her duty to use recourses to understand the word or ask questions in order to understand.  Reading critically has, in my opinion, power over other aspects of studying like budgeting time and taking effective notes. "

"If you are not getting what is needed out of the readings because of not knowing a word or understanding the meaning, your notes will be inaccurate.  Therefore, the material you study from is inaccurate and your test  scores will reflect your lack of understanding."

"Reading critically will be in the forefront of my studying habits"

"If there is a word to me that is unclear, looking it up is beneficial. Although this takes a little more time, it will benefit me in the long run.

"I have learned threw critical reading" "keeping up with the class throughout the whole semester is also vital.  Finally, maintaining good study habits and using tools like reading critically through the whole semester"

    Week #3

    September 14, 2007

"On Friday’s my brother and I cut lawns for some extra cash. We have four lawns that we do each week, and one of these lawns is my mom’s friends business, which is located in a mostly black neighborhood. While I was cutting the lawn there, an old man came out of his house and asked me if I could cut his lawn for $20. The first thought that went through my head was that I should not do business with him because I could not trust him. It was because he was black."

"I am a white male and I hold a lot of stereotypes, mostly on black people, for a number of reasons that I cannot begin to explain."

"I felt good about my decision when he had told me about his heart condition. This made me feel good about myself that day."

    Power 99,

Thank you for considering to send representatives to our Goodfellaz event.  We will be hosting a dance competition on October 3rd.

"More than a week prior to the event, auditions will be held and we will settle with 24 dancers to enter to competition event on the 3rd.

"Last year we hosted a similar event at the same location which was an enormous, record breaking success."

"We expect the event to run from 7:30 until 10:30 but we can not give an exact estimate."

"Susan B. Anthony was born at a time that was perfect for her passionate discourse.  She lived in an America of which fully oppressed certain individuals within its society.  There were women, whom were second-class citizens, not having the same rights as her white brethren, and also there were African men, women, and children placed in shackles and sold as property, to perform arduous, painstaking labor through coercion.  This time was the nineteenth century, the second century of America’s young life."

"The only profession a woman was allowed was that of school teacher and even that had felt its backlash, as men felt that a school full of female teachers would emasculate their young boys.  But women were cheap, so they remained.  Well, they remained until they found a husband, that is.  And that is one reason Susan B. Anthony did not marry.  She did not want to leave her position as school teacher just because she married some man."

"When the family moved to New York, her father would not let society beat the potential out of his daughter, and when school stopped supporting her “female” education, her father stepped in and taught her himself."

"As an adult, Susan B Anthony began to teach, even becoming headmistress of the female department at Canajoharie Academy. There she began the womanly fight...

AND NOW THE BEST SENTENCE EVER:
"There she met with abolitionists from around the country of whom wanted to end slavery, and joined the temperance movement, of which was meant to reduce alcohol consumption, which would in essence end a large amount of spousal abuse and neglect.

"Susan B. Anthony died before women got the right to vote, but if it wasn’t for her strident fight throughout her life, and the passion she put into the movement, who knows when or if women would have gotten the right to vote.  Anthony did not just talk, she walked the walk."

WHERE HAVE I HEARD THIS BEFORE:
"Douglass grew up in the same America of oppression as Anthony did.  His brethren were not only denied the right to vote, but were placed in shackles and forced to work."

"Intro – Is segregation still alive in the United States? Can it actually benefit the country on a cultural and economic level?  But before we speak about re-segregation we must first know exactly what the term and sub terms of segregation mean."

"According to an article titled “Segregation in the United States” by the Microsoft Encarta Online Encyclopedia 2007, segregation can be defined as the legal or social practice of separating people on the basis of their race or ethnicity. To break that down, this means that people had their territory cut out for them based on their appearance and characteristics in conjunction with the ideologies that came with said appearances and characteristics. Segregation in the United States was and is of two distinct types. Sub point (1) – De jure segregation... From 1965 onwards, segregation by law is illegal. Therefore, today in the U.S. there is no such thing as de jure segregation."

I've finally decided that I like Death Cab For Cutie's first album a lot but their later ones not so much. They had such a good groove but it's become mired in silly apathetic vocals. But Something About Airplanes is REALLY GOOD. My roommates will all be gone by Saturday so my room will actually be mine. I'm going to make ample use of it. Such things as watching tv, drinking beer, and sleeping will not be unheard of. I'm skipping my third to last class of the winter semester this afternoon. Fuck that. I'm going to sleep and hopefully will wake up for my second to last class at 7:30pm. Nothing hurts like nothing at all. I printed out 1000 pages of articles on Vermeer, Poussin, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Baroque, David, Ingres, Delacroix and Cezanne to get a background on my two upcoming art history classes.

Lauren taught me how to paint!

So far I painted two artworks that are in the phila museum and one rainbow Kandinsky chair. They all suck, but Im going to make more chairs and furniture and Lauren will make people enjoying their rainbow sensibility and it will be the cover to our first album. I think it should be called HOS 142: Studies in Hosteau.

I also picked my clarses. Im taking French culture since 1789 in French, the next music composition class in the music theory series, a class in personality in psych, a class on 19th century English novels from ENG(lish dept.),and the Baroque/17th century art class. I might audit (NOT FOR CREDIT) another class if it looks good. The only problem is it means class 5 days a week and 11 am MTWTh which is a little early. But I can skip those early lectures bc theyre music and psych and you can just read about those things in the books.

    Adrians coming must go Bye!

omg at the end of this year there is going to be a leap second for the first time in 8 years! it will occur at the end of 6:59:59 pm EST 12/31/05 so it will go 6:59:59pm - 6:59:60pm - 7:00:00pm. We should have a leap second party where nothing we do for that second matters and we can't use our stopwatches and other second clocks.

everyone IS dying! it started last weekend when ally's mom and i tried to order to upcoming deaths of the pope, price rainier, chief justice william rehnquist, and terri schiavo.

    tricia:

    rainier
    schiavo
    pope
    rehnquist

    chris:

    schiavo
    rainier
    pope
    rehnquist

    look who's right so far!

then at(JUST HEARD THAT JOHNNY COCHRANE DIED??) then at work i said, you know we need to do an under-over on terri schiavo, and i'll set the under-over as april 3rd and ill go under. well jared went over and sandy went under with me and we each pledged two dollars. well then lindsay eschleman came in and said she died at 9 AM! and now i say jared owes me and sandy two bucks, but he refuses to pay. but all he said was that if she dies before april 3rd he'd pay, and she did, so what the hell? im putting the under-over at the following for the following people after having researched their conditions...

pope: 12 am april 3rd (ill go under)
rainier: 12 am april 9th (over!)

i think rehnquist will hold out for a while. he just has cancer.

Congratulations! You're 137 proof, with specific scores in beer (80) , wine (100), and liquor (121).
All right. No more messing around. Your knowledge of alcohol is so high that you have drinking and getting plastered down to a science. Sure, you could get wasted drinking beer, but who needs all those trips to the bathroom? You head straight for the bar and pick up that which is most efficient.
